Attending the Seafarer’s Day Function at OSM Thome: A Day of Nostalgia, Connection, and Celebration

June 25, 2025 — a date that will forever hold a special place in my heart. For the first time, I had the privilege of attending an office function of my husband, Capt. Rajesh Todiwan, organized by OSM Thome, a company that has been a significant part of his career. Over the years mostly he’s onboard during such celebrations, so I seized this opportunity to step in as a family — to see, to feel, and to celebrate together. Wanted my sons to join us as well; hubby wasn’t as enthusiastic as I;  he may have been thinking that I might not attend as it was a working day for me and also school for my younger one. They have attended almost all my office programmes so this was the different side I wanted my children to see. The moment he told me of the programme and the invite I immediately declared-  We would all attend! He was surprised and pleasantly so.

A Chance to Bridge Worlds

My husband has spent over three decades navigating the seas right from cadet to master, carrying out some daring rescue missions too, and embodying the grit and resilience of a Master Mariner. While he’s often the face of bravery and professionalism to me having witnessed his journey being the anchor for him sometimes and lighthouse at the other, I wanted our children — aged 18 and 15 years— to witness a different side of his life. To see the bond, the appreciation, and the pride that the office team exudes. It was also my way of showing gratitude to the team that works tirelessly, often around the clock, to support our seafarers; no matter where they are in the world. I am a witness of many crucial plannings as well.

Preparation and Anticipation

From the start, I wanted everything to be perfect. I worked around my weekly schedule at work to take a day off on the 25th. When I inquired about the dress code, I learned it was blue and white — a simple yet elegant theme. I found a suitable dress for myself and coordinated with my husband. Our boys, true to their nature as teenagers would never want to match especially with their parents; becoming a band as they jokingly say. They sported their blue jeans, embracing the spirit of the event and honoring the seafarers. Making them let go of their favourite black would have been asking for too much!

Knowing parking might be a challenge, we booked an Uber sedan — but the ride turned out to be cramped with three tall men and me. Nevertheless we braved the almost two hour’s journey to the venue, arriving just in time at OSM Thome’s office, feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity. We were received by the office team Capt. Tarun Puri and Capt. Vishvesh Mehta themselves being there. It was great meeting Mansi and Vaibhav; the people I knew. Though Mr. Chetan Bhandari was not there at the event but he had not forgotten to send a reminder of the same. Such people always become the face of the company. It was wonderful connecting with other members of the team. Mr. Ajay D’costa happened to be a schoolmate of my IHM batchmate – the world is small indeed.

A Warm Welcome and Inspiring Stories

The large meeting room buzzed with energy — comprising of office staff, families, and colleagues connecting virtually from Delhi and Chennai offices, and some joining from onboard ships too. Capt. Arun Mehta welcomed us, sharing the inspiring growth story of OSM Thome, emphasizing their remarkable journey and promising future. It was a reminder of what dedication and vision can achieve. It was truly commendable!

Ms. Shruti, along with her team responsible for organizing the event, made sure everyone was engaged. From games that encouraged laughter and teamspirit to the story of bravery showcased online — each moment was a window into the extraordinary world of seafarers. As I watched the rescue mission unfold on the screen, I felt a deep sense of pride and gratitude. I could almost see my husband and his crew executing similar rescue in 2011, their grit shining through every frame. One of his operations was so significant that it earned him and me an invitation to visit Cyprus — a shining example of seamanship and bravery. The visit is still pending but it was a reminder that we must meet the boat captain Marios Yiousellis and others who were rescued.

Celebration, Connection, and Nostalgia

After the activities, we moved to Novotel for a well curated lunch event. Coincidentally, just three days earlier, hubby and I had been there for a conference where I was a speaker and received an award. Some places truly become special, don’t they? A cake-cutting ceremony was organized, it was an aesthetically designed cake, and all seafarers present were invited to do the honors. We had a delightful meal from the delectable buffet, alongside live music – Gaurav’s soulful singing, blending melodies from the past and present. It was a beautiful moment of joy, music, and togetherness.

During the conversations, I happened to meet Kulvir Singh, a  junior of mine from school. The small world we live in never ceases to amaze me. We exchanged numbers and shared so much from the good old days going back to over a couple of decades. I gifted his daughter Tanveer, a copy of my book, Illuminating Her Way — a collection of inspiring stories of women in hospitality and tourism, including some from the cruise industry. Glad I was carrying some copies for gifting at OSMThome office, this book is my way of giving back to a fraternity that’s been close to my heart.

A Heartfelt Thank You

As the day drew to a close, we bid farewell, grateful for the thoughtfully planned day. The goodie bags, filled with items that reflected the care and effort of the team, were a lovely touch. We booked a larger vehicle for the journey back!… relishing the comfort and the memories of the day.

I am immensely thankful to OSM Thome and their Mumbai office staff for creating such a wonderful experience. Attending this event not only deepened my appreciation for the seafaring community but also strengthened my connection to the profession that has shaped my husband’s life. As someone from the hospitality industry and a Master of Ceremonies myself, I understand the importance of planning and hosting events, and I look forward to offering my support in future endeavors just as a token of appreciation.

The Day of the Seafarer was more than just an event; it was a celebration of bravery, dedication, and human connection. It reminded me of the sacrifices made by our seafarers and the incredible teams behind the scenes. It was a day filled with nostalgia, laughter, and heartfelt moments — a beautiful reminder of the power of community and gratitude. Until next time, here’s to more shared stories, more celebrations, and the enduring spirit of those who serve at sea.
